Slice of Life Day 2

It’s March 2nd and it was almost 70° today. While I enjoyed the nice weather it is a bit ridiculous for this time of year. And we haven’t had any snow this year. None at all! I’m hoping for some snow this month. Otherwise it’s a long slog to spring break!

With such nice weather it was great to get a short hike in after school with the dogs. The park was packed (thanks to the ridiculously nice weather) which is the downside to warm weather this early in the year. I prefer the cold weather because the parks where I like to hike with the dogs are way less crowded during winter.

It’s controlled burn season in NJ. A haze hangs in the air and it smells incredible outside. Everywhere you go it smells like fire- wood, ashes, and smoke. New Jersey was one of the first states to implement controlled burns to prevent wildfires; the nice weather has given the forest service a lot of opportunities to do prescribed burns this year. I live on the edge of the Pine Barrens, a fire ecosystem, so it’s awesome to see the process of succession as the new plants burst forth after the fires are put out.

It’s supposed to rain the rest of the week, so the controlled burns will be put on hold. The smell will dissipate and new plants will start popping up in the woods. And rainy days mean fewer people on our trails!
