Poetry Friday

My new favorite poem is from Ellen Hopkins, written for Banned Book Week.

Manifesto by Ellen Hopkins

You say you’re afraid for children,

innocents ripe for corruption

by perversion or sorcery on the page.

But sticks and stones do break

bones, and ignorance is no armor.

You do not speak for me,

and will not deny my kids magic

in favor of miracles.

  1. I hadn’t seen that before — it’s perfect for Banned Books Week. I may use it next year. I did a Banned Books Display several years ago that was really popular. Unfortunately I’ve lost all my display space but I still like to discuss the week with my students and booktalk some of the books.

  2. Why is “Manifesto” your new favorite poem?

  3. Whoa. I’ll join you in raising that to favorite poem status!!
