Six Word Memoirs Beginning of the Year Activity

As a way to build community this year I decided to do an activity using I Can’t Keep My Own Secrets: Six-Word Memoirs by Teens Famous & Obscure. This week each student will be coming up with their own six-word memoir which we will then hang on the bulletin board for Back to School Night.  The memoirs will be anonymous but I think the parents will really enjoy them.  I know I hope to get to know my 100 students a bit better through this activity.

If you are interested, below you will find the handout I created for this activity.

  1. I do this every year with my 8th graders during our memoir/autobiography unit. They think it’s a fun challenge.

  2. I was planning on using Hemingway’s six word story with my college Comp students. Thanks for sharing your handout! I’m going to incorporate some of your ideas.

  3. I love this idea! I had heard about this six-word memoir idea from a friend that heard it at a conference this year. I have been thinking about how I could use it with my fourth graders. I think I may wait and use it later with a memoir study. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Love this idea! Thanks so much for sharing!

Hope your year is going well.

  5. This sounds amazing! Please send us pictures of the display when it’s done!

    Thanks,

  6. Love this! (And as a fellow teacher, a busy one just like you, I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that link to the handout, too!) Off to link to you on Twitter…

  7. Yay! Thank you for sharing. I’m starting our 5th graders off with a study on memoirs. We’re reading Boy: Tales of Childhood and they are writing their own memoirs. This is a great way to jump start our unit – as well as perfect to show parents at Open House!
