The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

In a future world, North America as we know it has been destroyed and the continent is now divided into 12 regions. The capital of this new nation, Panem, is in the Rocky Mountains and the remaining districts (1-12) are spread in descending order throughout the continent. Katniss lives in District 12, the last district, in what we call as the Appalachian Mountains. The closer you are to the Capital, the better off your district is. District 12 is in charge of mining coal and as the last district they are exceedingly poor. Starvation is a way of life and ever since Katniss’ father died in a mining accident, she has been in charge of caring for her mother and 12 year old sister, Prim.

The capital is bent on reminding the districts who is boss and does this by withholding food, supplies, and other necessities. Their trump card is the annual Hunger Games, which are held to ensure that no district makes an attempt at a rebellion or uprising. The Hunger Games are a like a combination of American Idol and Survivor, with Roman gladiator games tossed into the mix. Each district is required to supply one male and one female child between the ages of 12 and 18 for the annual event. The competitors are chosen via a lottery system. Families can buy more food and supplies for the year if they purchase additional entries into the games. Thus, the poorer you are the more likely it is that you have dozens of entries in the mix. The entries compound each year, so there are children with dozens of entries in the mix. Those who are well-to-do have fewer entries, with some only responsible for one entry. (In other districts, wealthier ones, children are raised for the opportunity to participate in the Games. These “Careers” see the games as an honor).

Ever since her father’s death, Katniss has been forced to purchase extra entries to ensure the survival of her mother and Prim. This, coupled with her talent for illegal poaching/hunting, has allowed them to live as comfortably as possible. Each year she hopes and prays that she is not picked, as the entire nation watches the drawing live, either in person or on their television. This year is different, however, as Prim is old enough to be entered. Katniss has not allowed her to gain extra entries, so she has only her required entry into the games. When Prim’s name is drawn, Katniss immediately volunteers to take her place, an old custom that has not been called into action in District 12 in many years.

Katniss and Peeta, the two competitors chosen from District 12, are immediately swept into a whirlwind of events that eerily resemble our culture’s obsession with reality TV. They are whisked to the Capital, where they receive stylists, makeovers, interview coaching, and gourmet food and living accomodations. While Peeta and Katniss slowly become friends and come to terms with their fate, they also realize that in order for one of them to survive, they must kill the other. You see, the Hunger Games leave the 24 competitors in a secret location (desert, tundra, etc) and the competitors must fight to the death. While the entire nation watches live on TV. The sole survivor wins food and supplies for their district for the next year, and set themselves up for life.

I read this novel in less than a day. The action is non-stop and heartpounding at many points in the story. Katniss is a likable character: she isn’t perfect, she isn’t a moral compass, and sometimes you even want to hate her. However, the situation she is thrust into is eerily similar to the modern-day obsession with reality TV and you can’t help but wonder if this the frightening direction into which we are headed. Collins never mentions a year in the novel, so it could be tomorrow or a thousand years from today. That in itself will keep you engrossed in the novel. The story is violent and writhe with betrayals, but there is also kindness, love, and drama. This is one novel you will not be able to put down. This is the perfect start to what should amount to a fantastic trilogy.

*For anyone who enjoyed Susan Beth Pfeffer’s Life As We Knew It and the dead and the gone, Collin’s Hunger Games should be a natural choice.

  1. I liked The Hunger Games well enough and will probably read the next one, but I didn’t like the wolves and I thought it was a little overdone in parts, almost as if she was writing in the hopes that it will be made into a movie. I do want to read Life As We Knew It and The Dead and the Gone.

    • I agree with you, in part. Yay I think that the wofls did not add anything to the book, espassical since i was haertbroken when rue died, and for her to turn into a wolf… upsetting. But the book was not overdone, those parts that seemed cony, added to the overall effect. One more thing, what auther does not want their book to be turned into a movie, hello, that’s were the money comes from, besides if a book can be turned into a blockbuster… it means the novel is exciting.

    • My daughter had to read this book for school and I read some of it too. She has to give the moral of the story and I’m not sure what it is. I read the end and I need to go back and read the whole thing, because what I read bothered me a lot.
Can anyone shed some light on the moral of the story?

      • Maybe:
        (1) that love and sticking up for each and cooperation other will win out over murderous enemies,
        (2) that change in dictatorships can only come if driven by ordinary folks, and
        (3) that keeping your humanity in a dictatorship is hard, but worth it?

      • the moral of the story is that you love PEETA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • To me, the most outstanding theme of the book is trust. Katniss’s inability to trust her mother, but her complete trust in Gale. Eventually, it is her trust in Peeta that wins them the Games. She is still unable to trust the capitol, which is explained from early on in the woods with Gale, and the capitol is unable to trust her. She needs to learn to trust more poeple, but in a world such as Panem, how is that possible? The districts can’t trust each other, but inside that arena Katniss learns to trust Rue. Rue could have easily abandoned her or betrayed her, but trusted Katniss enough not to. Unfortunately, Kat was unable to save Rue, but it was evident that she would have if she had the ability.
So, yeah. I think the moral of the story is to trust those who proves themselves worthy.

    • I loved the hunger games. I really want to find out what happens to Katniss and Petta when they get back. Whats the title of the next book?

    • You could be right, if the wolves never appear again in vol. 3. Then they would have no function. They don’t show up in vol.2. But what if they do in no.3? What if these kids-turned-into-monsters (mentally and physically) by a government accountabel to noone decide to join the fight?

      • the people did not actually turn into wolves rather the capital somehow created these wolves to have the same eyes as some of the tributes

    • Life As We Knew It was really good, but a little scary because the things in it could actually happen, but it was good. I liked The Hunger Games and Catching Fire better, though.

  2. Life as we knew it and the dead and the gone is amazing for people who never read it. And i’m looking foward to reading the hunger games. it sounds really interesting

    • Well itis a really amazing book, one of the best I every read, and everyone who I lent it too loved it. It is better then Twilight, but in my opinon that is not saying much.

  9. I could not find a wink of sleep after i began reading The Hunger Games. I needed to finish it as soon as i began. It is one of the most intense reads that I’ve found. Every twist and turn through the story has me self inflicting paper cuts and left me Hungry for more.
I highly recomend this story to any fan of good literature.

    • i agree completely. I work in a middle school library and started to read it so i could keep up with the kids and recommend something. I got totally sucked into the whole story can not wait for the next one. Unfortunately that is not until Sept. that means the whole summer wonder what is next

  10. you absolutely HAVE to read the Hunger Games! it was beyond incredible! i got it just after stephenie meyer said she loved it and i am sooooo glad she recommended it! it was awesome!!!!!

  11. There’s no doubt that this book was amazing. There was no way that I could put it down without finishing it. Then there were a couple of sleepless nights as I stayed up reading it.

BUT SERIOUSLY!!!!! WHEN IS THE NEXT BOOK COMING OUT????

  12. All I can say is, WOW!!

Stephenie Meyer, had this book on her website as a good book to read, or shall I say excellent – she said she couldn’t put it down. And of course I loved her Twilight series – I just knew she wouldn’t steer me the wrong way.

Well, I loved The Hunger Games!! Once I got thru the first three chapters, I could no longer put it down. Now I am patiently waiting for “Book 2″.

Please Suzanne Collins, hurry and finish the second book…

  13. The Hunger Games was awesome! I stayed up for two nights and read it! I read one hundred and three pages at school! I love it!!! You HAVE to read it! What is the name of the second book? Even Stephenie Meyer thought it was excellent! I even did what she did with it, took it out to eat with me!! If you don’t know weather or not you should read it. . . READ IT!!!

I read it in one sitting (I COULDN’T PUT IT DOWN!) and every page is filled with so much suspense slash romance slash adventure. It’s probably one of my most favoritEST (uber superlative ^^) books EVER. It just rocks my socks. Everyone should read it. 😀

  19. That was a great book! WHEN IS THE NEXT ONE COMING OUT?!?!?!?!

  20. I just finished this book and I just bought it yesterday evening. I couldn’t put it down. It was really amazing. You get stuck in it just like Stephanie Meyers twilight saga I can’t wait for the 2nd book

  22. Holy crap. I couldnt put this book down. I was addicted to teh twilight series when i read the first page, and so when Stephenie Meyer suggested The Hunger Games on her website, i decided to try it. Books in the meantime, have not been so great. I love to read, but nothing catches my eye as much as twilight did. And now the hunger games. Truely, This book is on my top book favorites, a hard list to make. I literally just put the book down not an hour ago, and am currently hunting for the next book. My parting words with the book were as follwed “ARE YOU KIDDING ME? A SECOND BOOK, I CANNOT WAIT THAT LONG. I NEED TO KNOW.” Needlesstosay, i think i scared my neighbors. So I highly and strongly suggest this book to ANYONE who likes a good read. 🙂 ❤

  23. I absolutely love Stephanie Meyers Twilight series! I formed an unhealthy addiction by reading them:) I read all four books in 1 week and then repeated that same cycle again. I saw that Stephanie Meyer recommended this book on her website and was hesitant to check it out because I was so madly in love with her Twilight books-or rather the characters in it (Love you Edward Cullen!). I read the first chapter online and immediately upon finishing that chapter went and bought the book. It is an amazing read! I couldn’t put it down. I was sooo mad when I realized I had to wait for another book…ahhh! Anyone know when it is supposed to come out?

    • If you haven’t read the other comments people on here wrote, Catching Fire (the next book) is coming out on September 1.

  24. OMG! I so LOVE this book! I am soooo happy that Stephenie recominded this book! It is soo good!
I hope theres going to be another book!

  25. I LOVE THIS BOOK! I just barely finished it last night and I stayed up till three o clock reading. I couldn’t put it down! I loved it and I would recommend it to anyone! It is definitely a MUST read. I hope she writes the second one soon I don’t know how long I can wait.

  26. I just finished reading the book and I LOOOOOVED IT (says in a harmonizing voice). I was upset at the end because I wanted to read more. I really hope more are coming out and SOON! So Suzanne PLEASE hurry =). BTW I think it would make a great movie (with the whole Twilight hysteria, I couldn’t help but think of a movie while reading THG).

  27. hey is there gonna be a sequel for the hunger games any time soon?

  28. That was a great book!

I am now wondering when is the next one coming out?

  29. I LOVE THIS BOOK and I’m nine I love that secret romance and i’m releived their will be a BOOK 2 I must find out what happens between Peta and Cantniss i’m sorry if I spell thier names wrong I listend to it. I thought Hamich was a hilarios charactor I wonder if I could compare him to Ripred in the Gregor books which by the way I reconized where the same style same Romance. Alot of the characters have a sort of connection. I also would like a movie. HHHMMMM I wonder if I could make it Ive got the charecters. Ahh well I finished it 4:46 A.M. and ive been thinking about it all day. I was very inspired and I loved the literature If anyone knows when the next one comes out post it but I am going to try to find out. … 1 kiss equals one bowl of broth i realized…

  31. The second book is entitled Catching Fire and will be out in september 2009

  32. WOW, i just spent all of last night reading and now, after having had barley any sleep, i have finish the Hunger Games. This book is a total must read! I loved it so much and cannot wait for the next book to come out. I totally want to hear more about my new fav character, Peeta!!! I definately recommend this book.

  33. This book was fantastic! I purchased it from the Book Fair @ the school I teach at. After reading it, I am going to begin reading it to my students and we will even have a “Mock” Hunger Games competition in our classroom.

  34. I saw this book on the shelves of Barnes and Noble and thought it looked interesting, but put it back. It stayed on my mind all week after that, and then I see on Stephanie Meyers website she LOVED it. I went that weekend and purchased it. At first it was slow for me, but after that… omg, I couldn’t put it down! I love this book, and can not wait for the next. It is def. one of my favs. I’m still thinking about the book weeks later. I got Life as we knew it after reading this book, and it was really good too… but sorry, Hunger Games is by far better! =)

  35. i just finished the hunger games. very good book. reminded me of the movie called the condemed which by the way is a good movie if you like the hunger games. i cant wait for catching fire. the book does resemble the twilight books. i wish more authors would write from that perspective. maybe even from a boyqp tuiew.

  36. Hello, I just finished reading Hunger games and it rocks. It is sooooo good. I love it. The no.1 book ever…. So I have a question… who do you like more.. Peeta or Gale?? In the beginning I liked Gale but as the book progressed I just loved Peeta, He is the best!!!

  37. THIS WAS AMAZING. i cant stop thinking about it. i literally started sobbing the moment i put it down, partly just because it was over. i keep re-reading different parts and start crying. it was amazing. definately reccomend to any Twilight lover.

  38. OMG! I just loved this book! I had been wanting to read it for a long time and when i found it in our library i FRAKED OUT. It’s not due for another week and a half so i think I’ll read it again………..

  39. I LOVED this book. she wrote another series called the underland chronicle. they are my favorite read both

  40. I really liked this book. I couldn’t get into it until the lottery but after that it was great. I was so sad when it was over because I really wanted to know what happens with Katniss and Peeta. September is too long to wait.

  41. This book was a fantastic read! it took me about 40 pages to get completely into it but once i got there i could not put it down! it grabs you with the amazing characters and thrilling plot. i was so angry when i finished though, i felt like i was just waiting for another 300 pages to appear! unfortuanentely we have to wait a full year for the sequal but its totally worth the wait. i am a huge twilight fan myself, and even though i loved the book i did not find them similar. my friends will hate me for saying this, but i love this book as much as twilight (and thats A LOT!!!) Thanks for the great read Suzanne ( :

  42. THE HUNGER GAMES WAS A TOTALLY AWESOME BOOK! IT WAS SO FLIPPIN’ BEASTLY! cant wait for the next book

  43. Thank you Stephenie Meyer for recomending this book. I just simply love it. This book is just as “more than great” as the Twilight saga and the books about Harry Potter, and thats a lot comming from me. A lot of books are good. This one was, as I’ve already said, more than great!!!!! I cant wait for the next book!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. 1 word——–AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. hi!!! i love ALL of Sizanne’s books!! espeacilly th GREGOR books!!! i am trying to the book THE HUNGER GAMe so i can readit, it looks really cool

  46. I just finished reading hunger games.. it took me 5 hours and I didn’t even notice the time I was totally engrossed with the book. I think I like it better than twilight (gasp) I can’t wait for book 2. I do hope they move the release date slot sooner for books 2! hunger game rocks!

  47. Yes the story does sort of sound like Battle Royale but Battle Royale has that stupid mess up stuff in it that also makes sometimes no sense. My friend recommended it to me because I love these plot twisting books :D. This is my first book that I ever read from this author and you are now one of the best authors I know. My favorite authors were Stephenie Meyer and Rick Riordan. This story was by far perfect and I just finished it. I’m surged with so much excitement for number 2 :D. Write 10 books for this series, I’ll buy every single one. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good read and plot twisters.

  48. is there going
    to have a nummber 2?

  49. THIS BOOK WAS SO AMAZING I RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE. IT WAS THE MOST INTENSE BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!

  50. I dont get why everyone is saying “i dont know if i should read it or not”.ITS CALLED A LIBRARY! Just go get the book for free at the library, and if you dont like it, send it back! But anyways, i read the book and thought it was amazing. Cant wait until #2 comes out!

  51. oh my gosh. i’m not done yet but it is really pretty good… yeah…
YOU SHOULD READ IT! it will stick with you forever, and it’s true… 😀

  52. I read this book I read it in 3 days..I had to force myself to sleep at night..All through the day my friends would say why are you reading or thats lame..I would say I am addicted! Dude I cant wait until the 2nd ones comes out I will cry and read it..This book is sooo awwesome but I hope she stays with Peeta!I like him..He seems romantic! and he saves her from the careers! I like him alot..I cried when Rum died!I waas hoping district 1 lost!So rude! I love this book though! Keep on writing series!! Love your fan!! READ IT

  53. I agree that The Hunger Games was an excellent book – I couldn’t put it down; I read it during math class and English class – but near the end it started to get a little sensationalist, as if the author wasn’t sure how to cut off the Games. That is, I really liked the scene with the berries, but I didn’t like the entrance of the wolf-mutants; it seemed kind of like a random tie-up to give the other tributes a “proper” end when they should have just been disposed of throughout the plot.

That being said, the rest of the book was great. I loved the setting and the clever turnings of the plot – it was refreshing to read about how each character felt about the actions of all the other characters.

I would never make this book into a movie. Never.

If a movie was made, the film industry would be doing the very thing that the novel’s antagonist (the Capitol) does to the tributes themselves – treating them as entertainment, regardless of their motivations, feelings, or views…

Doesn’t anybody else find it a little ironic?

  54. det här är en av de bästa böckerna någonsin!!! it’s one of the best books ever!!!(if anybody wonder what’s written in swedish)

  55. I thought hunger games was an incredible book. It made you really think about what the U.S. would be like after it was destroyed and how people would react and live.

  56. I absolutely LOVED this book. I loved Twilight but I found the Hunger Games more interesting and written better. I read it about a month and a half ago and I still think of it a lot. the first week after I read it it consumed my life. Anyway its a fantastic book thats written really well, the concept and plot are amazing. I strongly recomend it to anyone over the age of 10 give or take a year. Definately my favorite book =)

  57. this book sounds almost exactly like Koushun Takami”s Battle Royale. “the hunger games” may be the book that restarts the Post- Apocalypse genre that books like ” The Deathlands” and “Outlanders” series started in the mid 80’s. if you want to see what America would be like after a Nuclear War Check out Deathlands by James Axler. but read The Hunger Games too.

  58. I just finished the hunger games and I wish the sequel was out already. I am actually a major fan of “twilight” and “the host” and I was on Stephanie Meyers website, and she recommended reading “The Hunger games.” I was curious so I read the first chapter online and I was hooked, I had to go out and buy the book the very next day. I love this book. I hihgly recommend reading it!

  59. I am seriously going to flip my wig here- Catching Fire isn’t due out until September 2009? ARGH! I loved this book. I read it not knowing anything about it except Stephenie Meyer had it up on her website. Boy am I glad I did, but I am going to be IN AGONY for another almost-year. Seriously, there should have been a warning label that the book had a “to be continued” in it!!!! AUGH!!!

  60. I Love this book!!! My mom works for scholastic so she always gives me new books to read. I needed a sci-Fi book for a book report and my mom told me she heard the Hunger Games was good!! So she gave me the book to read and i couldnt put it down!! I read it in 2 days!! i finished it last night! I am dying to read the next book to see what happens to Peeta and Katniss!! I was so excited cause i thought i would know what was happening to them and them the book ended!!! When does Book 2 come out?!?!?

  61. I liked the book but it had a little of romance and im not a big fan of the genre. Otherwise it was a very good book.

  62. Most amazing ever… that’s all I can say.

Catching Fire- Gonna be amazing just like Hunger Games

  63. I really loved this book. And after reading the twilight saga and being completly obsessed with it i was scared i wouldnt be able to get into another book. But when i heard stephanie meyer liked it i baught it and i read it in a day! i cant wait for book 2!!!

  64. I thought it was an awesome book!!!! I couldn’t stop reading it!!! I can’t wait til Catching Fire to see what happens to Katniss and Peeta!!!

  65. This was such a great book! It was so exciting for me to read! I litterally could not put it down. Everything about it, the whole concept of it, really made me think. I love it. I’m mad that i have to wait a year to find out what happens next! I’m sure it will be worth the wait though! woooo!

  66. omg wen is catchin fire comin out??????? i need 2 no or i will lose it!!!!

  67. THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER! ITS CRAZY, SCARY, SAD, EXCITING,and AWESOME. Its got a little bit of everything!

  68. I absolutely loved this book. I can’t wait for Catching Fire to come out. I actually read it at least four times (I think I may have an OCD…) before I started reading the Twilight series, but since I’ve finished reading the Twilight series, I’ll probably read The Hunger Games again.

  69. Just saying here: I HATED twilight. That may have something to do with my gender or just because it is crap, but The Hunger Games…out of this world. Pretty much my favorite book ever. Violence, drama, makes you think, (and some romance 😉 ) it is simply AMAZING. Seriously, go and buy it so youll show up and watch the movie i’ll make of it. INTENSE!

  70. Awesome.. Suzanne Collins has done it again! Along with the Underland Chronicles The Code of the Claw, this is her best wworks yet! Read it… Love it… And wait for the next one!

  71. Personaly I liked Twilight well the movie at least the book suked But the hunger games is awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  72. I read Life as We knew it, but I didnt know there was a sequel until now!
Im ordering it from the library this second.
Anyway, my friend gave me The Hunger Games as a Chrristmas present. I opened the first page…. and BAM! 4 hours later I’m staring at the last page wondering how i just read all that. And how im going have to wait a year to read the next book in the series. I really liked the Hunger Games!!!

  73. Kiwi, I disagree. I think this should absoultly be made into a movie. The story is so plot intense, without a lot of internalizing (even though it’s from Katniss POV) I think it could actually expound and deliver more of what the book brings out. There is reading about poverty, and seeing it first hand. There is hearing about people eating dog and rat stew, and there is seeing it chopped up on the block. (Yes, It still wouldn’t REALLY be dog, but a pictures worth a thousand words). I think it would drive home the messages Suzanne wanted to give without diminishing the book.

  74. omfg i really liked twilight and all but hunger games was waaaaaaaaaaaay better i couldnt put it down i went to bed about 1oclock everynight cause i wanted to finish it i even read it in the middle of class!!! i realy really hope they make it into a movie cept i think it might be kind of hard to any way its the best book ive read ever now im gonna read the rest of her books as soon as can get my hands on them

  75. The Hunger Games, best book I’ve ever read! But what do people mean they haven’t started yet, what’s up w/ that!?

  76. I loved this book right from the Amazon.com excerpt. Katniss is such an amazing character, strong, noble, determined, but she has flaws which makes her human and therefore loved by the reader. The post- apocolyptic world is much like that of The Giver, and even, in some ways, Ender’s Game. It’s so odd though, I actually find that kind of future not so far off.

  77. THE NEXT BOOK IS CALLED CATCHING FIRE AND IT COMES OUT SEPTEMBER 1ST 2009!!!!!!!!!!!

  78. I loved this book from the minute I started reading it! I got it for Christmas and finished reading it the next day……….I think Suzanne did a great job with it and can’t wait for the next book!!!

  79. I loved this book and can’t wait till’ the next one! It has all the things i love… mystery, a little romance, rebel, and a fight to the end were Katniss Everdeen never gives up till’ she is reunited with her 12 year old sister, Primrose! If you love this book i would also recomend Harry Potter for the same reasons, a fight to survive their twisted world where all around people are suffering!

  80. I LOVE the Hunger Games! The book was absolutely amazing! The only thing I didn’t like was how she ended it. I wish Suzanne could’ve wrote about her love triangle with Peeta and Gale and also her reunion with her mother and sister. But otherwise, it was thrilling! I think the sequel comes out September 2009. I think it is called “Catching Fire”. I actually found this book off of Rick Riordan’s website! Some books I reccomend whole-heartedly:
    -Harry Potter series (J.K. Rowling)
    -Twilight saga (Stephenie Meyers)
    -Percy Jackson series (Rick Riorsdan)
-39 Clues series (Rick Riordan and other authors)

  84. I thought The Hunger Games was amazing and I am anxiously awaiting the next one. It has become my favorite book and from the minute I opened it I could not put it down! It was excellent!

  85. I did like the book, it was very enticing. I just didn’t like how the end ended up as a romance novel. Ooh, Peeta is upset at Katniss and she dosn’t know how she feels about him yet, I don’t care.

  86. peeta mellark is so adorable. I ❤ Him

  87. I read the hunger game and fell I love just a quick as I did with twilight I can’t wait tell the next book… Even tho Katness is hate able its a kind of a hate to love relationship anyone who loves twilight will love this book

  88. omg this book was absolutely amazazing! WHEN IS BOOK 2 COMING OUT!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  89. i wanna do it with peeta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  90. Chillax
With the “OMG STEPHENIE MEYER SAID SHE LOVED THE BOOK SO LIKE I WANT TO READ IT TOO.”
I know this sounds offensive but every novel is suppose to have a moral.
And what do you learn from Twilight?
That you have to ditch your friends for your insta-hottie Edward that you “think is perfect” because you’re obviously infatuated?
That you have to have no ambition at all but to marry after highschool with a guy who emotionally abuses you?
    Is that so?
What about the fan girls who thinks that life is all just about boys after reading it?
    Hmm?
If you want to read real good literature
I think The Hunger Games suite that catagory
    the best.

  91. I’m totally catching fire.
You can count me on that=)

  92. I Totally LOVE IT! IT WAS AWSOME IN EVERY WAY! iam so disappointed though that CATCHING FIRE comes out in septmeber 09 it isn’t fair. i wish it could come out sooner! every one will love this book.U HAVE TO READ IT! U WON’T B ABLE TO PUT IT DOWN SO CLEAR UR SCHEDULE! =)

  95. The Hunger games was a really good book i finished it in a day it was full of surprises

when is the next book coming out???

  96. 0MG! the book was amazinng..and guyss life as we knew it (taking place in P.A) and the dead and the gone (taking place in NY) are amazing books as well (written by a different author but still get u thinkin about life) these books just make u realize how good we have it…its actually pretty sad…i really can not wait to read the second book and am so happy that the first didnt leave u hanging like u expect it to. IF YOU HAVENT READ IT..ITS A MUST! =)

  97. This is one of the best books ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  98. seriously, this book is amazing. possibly the best one i’ve ever read (and i read alot.)! it covers so many topics and is completely different for anyone whos bored of “mainstream” stuff! i reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys reading and doesn’t mind having to think about things! can’t wait for the next book! oh, and anyone who enjoyed this book might want to check out this title – “siberia” by ann halam. “dr franklins island” by ann halam is also superb but if you’re looking for another read that is similair-ish to “the hunger games” give “siberia” a shot!

  100. I was able to get a galley of this when it first came out because of the group I’m in outside of my school. It was well loved in our group. We cannot wait until the sequel comes out! Personally I was hoping that this book would win the Printz award, but alas did not.

  101. i think that u should make the second book come out earliar like in febuary im anxious to read it i love this book so much i like it better than twilight

  102. AMAZING! AMAZING! AMAZING! THE BEST BOOK SINCE TWILIGHT!!!!! OMG! it was awesome!! n e 1 who hasnt read it ….READ IT!!!!!

  103. The Hunger Games was apsolutely amazing. I cried twice while reading it haha.
I would tell ANYONE to read this book. It shouldnt be missed by anyone.
If u havent read it-then go read it!!!
    now!!
    stop reading this and go!!!!

  104. I think this book was simply amazing. I couldn’t stop think about what was going to happen next every time I put it down. I’m excited for the next book and will deffinatley look into it.

Also, not to be rude, but this book should not even be in comparison with Twilight. I honestly think that that book has been turned into a fashion statement more than a novel. The Hunger Games sweeps Twilight out by far in my opinion.

  105. this book is one of my favorites. I would recommend it to anyone! in case anybody is wondering, Catching Fire(the second one) comes out on September 8th according to Barnes and Nobles website. check it out. it has the cover on there and everything.

  106. correction September 1st!! sorry : ]

  107. I just finished this book today, and I absolutely ADORE it now! I thought it was better than TWILIGHT! (That’s a lot coming from me.) It had non-stop action, and romance, and like all good books, it made me question myself.

  108. I LOVED this book. i read it in 2 days! i just finished reading it yesterday. it’s very action-packed and you have to read it every second. I can’t wait for book 2. the ending is the best. The end of every chapter has a surprise that will leave you thinking about it for hours. I want to read some other books of Suzanne Collins. I hope the Hunger Games becomes a movie. PLEASE Suzanne Collins, finish book 2!!!! =)

  109. it might be better than twilight!!!!

  110. Got the recommendation from Stephanie Meyer’s website. It is an excellent read. Also, very emotionally charged. Loved every part of it except having to wait for the next book. Hurry up and get that 2nd book out.

  111. I loved this book, and I read it in just four hours. When it ended in a “end of book one” taunt, I got up and stormed about the room. I was so angry! I have to know what happens! I couldnt sleep that night! And, September! I cant wait! Seriously!

I did love the Twilight series, but I found that Katniss was the heroine that Bella never was, nor cold ever be. It wasnt about love, but about her amazing ability to pull herself out of the muck and execute exactly what she needed to do! Something about a woman in control of her destiny (sorry, but Bella kind of allowed herself to be controlled by love) is amazing to me. And the beautiful innocence at the thought of love. I found t to be a much better and more put together read than any book the Twilight series (sorry Stephanie Meyer!).

    Bex

  112. And, I agree also with Kiwi, that perhaps a movie would be exactly what the capitol would desire.

A movie would only gore things up to where the plot and pure beauty of Katniss would be lost to CGI hovercrafts and special effects.

  113. I have to wait nearly TWO YEARS until I can have the full trilogy? NOOOO!!

  114. […] particular YA interest: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (published here in a few weeks), The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau […]

  115. i finished it in one school day, thats how much i liked it. and, believe it or not, there’s actually not that much time for reading in an average high-school day. its going to be agonizing waiting for Catching Fire and the last book!

  116. i loved this book!!! It was awesome!! Can”t wait till book 2!!

  117. omg! this book is soo good. i didn’ t think i would like it at first but im totally in love with it i can’t wait till september when the new book comes out.

  118. Hunger Games right now stand at the top of my Favorites list!!!
Peeta and Katniss and Cinna are my fave characters. But i love the whole section in the book where Kat got closer to peeta than ever. Gale and Madge should be a good couple. Peeta and Katniss the PERFECT couple. The chapters that took place in the cave had the suspense just flowing. I was wondering if Katniss really did love Peeta or was it just to get votes. At the end when peeta found out that Katniss had that as a stunt i was just shocked. Peeta was like the perfect mix of the boy next door and a sweet hearted person. But when it said “Already the boy with the bread is slipping away from me. I take his hand, holding on tightly. preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when i finally have to let go.” I was actually crying. It was so sad how he loved her since he was 5 and how Katniss broke his heart. I was mad at haymitch for planning this stunt. But i hope the second book comes quicker than September 8th, 2009!!!! I NEED the 2nd book, i need to find out what happens. But i think Peeta will forgive Katniss for the stunt after all, he does love her. When i finished the book, was crying and staring at the End of Book One part just thinking to myself when is the next book coming out. Unfourtunately i have to wait till september to read it!!! >. < why cant september come faster im dying to see what katniss does.
I cannot wait till Catching fire comes out i need a copy!!!!!!

  121. this book is one of my favorates. It is a boy and a girls book. Couldnt stop reading it. READ IT

  122. I started reading the Hunger Games this morning. I spent the entirety of my double free period reading. And now I am done. Holy fantasticness. I can’t wait for the second one!!!

  123. This is one amazing book. I would even say it was better than twilight’s entire series. Can’t wait for the next book. They should really make a movie about it cause the book’s written perfectly as a script.

  124. This is my all-time FAVORITE book. I read it in one day and couldn’t put it down. I think the whole idea is SO interesting and its all dramatic and stuff (in a good way, of course!) I have also read Life as we knew it” and that was really good. I’ll have to read the other one. I’m looking forward to the second Hunger Games as well.

  125. i was on stephonie meyers website and heard about it and loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cant wait till CATCHING FIRE wich comes out september 1 i am sooooo exieted even though it feels like FOREVER from now!!!!!! i really think it should be a movie but with all the killing i dont know how they will be able to pull it off cuz its with arrows and spearsand stuff

  126. the hunger games was a really good book the plot was awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was all trry eyed when rue died she was my favorite charecters, why did she have to die so early in the book. But the mutant dogs was a wierd part the kids that died become mutant dogs doesint really make sense, but it was a pretty cool part. I recomend this book to anyone you’ll not be able to put it down i promise it will pull you in right away

  127. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! i love the hunger games sooooooo much!!!! one of the best books that i have ever read!!!! i want the next book now!!!!!!

  128. This book was absolutly amazing.
I can’t wait for the second to come out,
and a movie would be pretty incredible with the right actors and directer.

Seriously, I can’t wait to see what Suzanne comes up with next.

And I really want to know who Katniss chooses,
    Peeta or Gale.

  129. omg i read the hunger games and fell in L-O-V-E with it the first chapter! the movie will definatly be good cause suzzane iz writing it herself ,the screenplay!
    comes out in2011

u wont be able to see when katniss is imagining what haymich is thinking during the games though!!!

  130. THE HUNGER GAMES grabbed me right from the word go. I thought it was incredibly well written, pacy and is really one of those books you physically CAN’T put down! The characters were fantastic, funny and heartbreaking at the same time. And sure, the plot is a little like Battle Royale, but the book is no worse off for this.

  131. I havent read a book in years and when I picked this up from the library I could put it down in fact I just finished reading it for the first time and Im ready to get started on the next one.

  132. When does the next Hunger Games come out?

  133. On September 1, Catching Fire, the sequel is out. I can’t wait!
The Hunger Games is my favorite book-
I both cried and laughed, and the twisting plot is amazing!

  135. This was one of the most amazing books i’ve ever read! I bought it for my schools summer reading list, and i decided to read it before i went to bed thinking i could get it finished that way because i thought the book would be boring as most of the books on the lists to me ussualy are but i litteraly couldn’t go to sleep after i started. I got in bed around 12:00 and didn’t go to sleep until 7:38 this morning when i finished the book! I loved this book so and i’m aching for the sequel. I can’t wait until september this year when it comes out!

    September 2k9 everyone!!(:

  136. p.s im also an avid twilight lover who suffers from ocd [[obsessive cullen disorder]] (: lol

  137. OMGGGG!!!!!!!!!! i absolutely loved the book! i couldnt put it down and was always looking forward for the next chapter. i cant wait for the second book to come out in september, but thats sooooooooo far away, and im sure ill spend all summer wondering what it will be like, but if its bad ill be really pissed! but im still gunna wait because the first book was amazing!!!

  138. Dude. If in the second one she makes her like Peeta. Argh! I can’t take any more sappy romance stuff. Besides Peeta is an annoying weakling and Ms. Collins will ruiin it for me if she gives katniss a weakness for Peeta. Stay tough Katniss!

    • I agree, but for different reasons, he isnt a weakling, she just doesnt deserve him. He is sweet and he saved her life time after time and she just thought he was pretending and didnt realize he wouldnt have pretended so far. I think Peeta is far more stronger (Bad grammer I apologize) than Katniss, because Katniss even said that he would be lucky if she didnt kill him before the careers when she found out he was with the careers because he was protecting her. And even after she found out all he did for her, she still was not entirely grateful, it was just an act in her mind. So I don’t think she deserves Peeta.

  139. This is by far the best book I have read, EVER! I love it the way Suzanne can make you feel nervous or excited at moments in the book. Your missing out if you don’t read hunger games.

  140. Omg!!! I just loved the hunger games! at first it started out as a boring summer reading project, and then it turned into an awesome book that i actually WANTED to read. 143. THIS BOOK WAS BETTER THEN TWILIGHT!!!!!!!!!! PACHAWE! (cha)

  144. The Hunger Games was such a good book (violent) but it was the best book i have ever read book two comes out in september 09

  145. of course the hunger games was better than twilight; smeyer can’t write her way out of a paper bag! faint praise, i know, but let’s look at it critically (i know, something not everyone is capable of (ZOMG THIS IS THE BEST BOOK EVER!!1!! – and if that’s really the case, i feel bad for you), but let’s give it a try, shall we?). as far as scifi plots, it’s been done before, more than once, and better. the characters are generally one-dimensional: the “tough” girl who’s had a hard life, the smoldering best friend, the blond, blue-eyed lovestruck guy, the various other tributes who are nothing more than true stock characters (think cato, foxface, etc.). let’s also not forget the deus-ex-machina(s) of the little parachutes of help *insert eyeroll here* and my personal grammatical/semantic pet peeve on p.156 – “I hear the anthem that proceeds the death recap.” proceeds?? are you kidding me? the word we’re looking for here is, of course, *precedes*, as in, “comes before.” der. a rather glaring error, imo.

all that said, i can see how the book would draw a particular readership in – it’s fast-paced, filled with enough description to make it interesting imagistically, and has just enough action and violence to satisfy those living in a videogame/rpg world.

someone asked about the “moral” of the story, but i don’t know that it has an easily identifiable one in terms of the decisions made by the main character (obviously the capitol represents an amoral/immoral society), but katniss has no trouble sending her arrows into certain characters and not others…

stephen king wrote a pretty interesting review of the book, for those who haven’t seen it already: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20223443,00.html

  146. I love the hunger games. The books are amazing and it’s hopeless to stop reading.

And I almost can’t wait for the third book!
But I have heard that they are going to make a movie too, in 2011. And that’s just terrible! I don’t want that to happend coz I know the movie will suck…

  147. I really like this book because of the action and adventure!
I thought I wouldn’t really like it cuz it sounded boring but I got it yesterday and to write a 3 page summary about it and I’m already half way through it! Its due in like 4 or 5 days!
    I jst started this morning!

  148. my friend got me into the hunger games! i didnt like them completely, but they are good! try them out!

  149. Oh my gosh.
The Hunger Games was the best book iv’e ever read.
    Better then Twilight, most definetly!

The “Love” is so much better then Twilights.
But if Stephanie Meyer likes the book, I bet you will to.

It was so Suspensful. I couldn’t put it down!

  161. I really did like the book, the concept is intriguing. The only thing was that Katniss was sometimes really shallow. I really want to know what happens with the boys. I really hope she changes though because in the first book (which is all I have read and am planning to read the second sometime) she is rash and sometimes impertinent and does she not understand that (spoiler alert) both Gale and Peeta really like her. Especially peeta????? Gale is a little more subtle, but is she really so shallow that she cant see peeta who is right there? I can understand the urge to survive (other wise there would be no book) but that was one thing that really bothered me in the book. Otherwise this book far exceeded my expectations!
