Found (The Missing Book 1) by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Anyone who knows me has heard me sing the praises of Margaret Peterson Haddix. Her Shadow Children series has hooked many reluctant readers and turned them into voracious readers in my classroom. When I saw that she was beginning a new series, I was very excited. I just finished reading Found (The Missing) and I LOVED it. The plot is difficult to summarize without giving away too much, but I will try.

A plane that appears out of nowhere. Thirty-six babies mysteriously on the plane. No pilot, not crew, no adult passengers. Then, just as suddenly, the plane disappears.

Thirteen-year-old Jonah has always known that he was adopted, and he’s never thought it was any big deal. In fact, his parents spend more time thinking about it than he does (hence their bookshelves full of “adoption books). That all changes when he and his friend, Chip, also adopted, start receiving strange, anonymous letters. The first one says, “You are one of the missing.” The second one says, “Beware! They’re coming back to get you.”

Jonah, Chip, and Jonah’s sister, Katherine, are plunged into a mystery that involves the FBI, a possible baby- smuggling operation, that same airplane that appeared out of nowhere — and maybe even ghosts. The kids discover they are caught in a battle between two opposing sides that want very different things for Jonah and Chip’s lives.

This series promises to be just as good, if not better, than Shadow Children . The Missing is a pageturner with twists and turns you will never see coming. The next book isn’t due out until Spring 2009 and I am already dying to read it! Margaret Peterson Haddix is sure to draw in many more reluctant readers with this speculative fiction series. I can’t sing its praises enough!!

  1. Cool. I really like the stand alone Double Identity, too. I’m going to pick this up soon. Maybe I’ll save it for Mother Reader’s 48 Hour challenge though.

    • I am only 11 I have read the book in my class I am in 5th grade I read the book because I read at the level Z I think it is a little bit confusing but very off my seat as if I was wanting to read more. It was a challenge to be focest but I did and I loved it I highly recemend it !

      • I can tell you are in the fifth grade you spelled focused wrong

      • I am in 5th grade and read this too, and I am not joking I love reading this and am kind of angry they haven’t release the last 3 books(revealed that there would now be 8 books in the series!!) yet.

  2. My kids LOVE Haddix. I will look for this for my classroom. Thanks for the review!

  3. I haven’t read anything by Haddix, but I’m adding this one to my TBR list. Thanks for the recommendation.

  11. MUST READ BOOK!

  12. i just finished this book and i love it it took me a full 48 hours to finish because i couldnt get enough of iti i am so thrilled about the 1 coming out in spring of 2009 ide reccommend this to ppl who love suspenseful/sci-fi books

  13. This was an AMAZING book!!… but the ending sucked!! When is book 2 coming out? or is it already out? or will there be a book 2? If there isnt a book 2… I WILL DIE!!! this book is a must read!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. I JUST CANNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!
    🙂

  18. I READ THIS BOOK IN ABOUT 5 HOURS OR LESS! THIS THRILLING PAGE TURNER IS WELL WRITTEN! I CAN’T WAIT TILL BOOK 2! I COULD RELATE TO THIS BOOK VERY WELL BEING ADOPTED! I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL! PARTICULLY ADOPTED CHILDREN!

    • why would you recommend this to adopted children?> why do adopted kids need to walk around thinking they were stolen and bought?

      • This book is a very good recommendation to children considering it is a thrilling page turner with action and suspence. It is not meant to steer children into the direction of thinking their adopted. It only seems like that if your make it seem like that. For example, The book ‘I will teach my dog 100 words, by Dr. Suess. It isnt meant for 5 year olds to read, then try to teach their own dog to talk. As a 12 year old girl, i truely think its absurd for someone to think their child would be stolen or bought. Its only a book made for a book-lover to enjoy!

  19. I loved this book I suggest it to everyone to read. Especially read it if you are adopted like I am this is a really good book.

It featured a teen in a sticky situation and was every bit as good as this book. read both NOW! You will be thrilled, I personally know it. Do yourself a favor.

Another great read I have found was the revenge of the forty seven samurai, better for those who like historical fiction. Happy Reading!

  83. I love this book!!
    I’m a 8th grader!
and at first I never heard about the book.
Then one day my reading teacher took us to the library and told us to check out a book.
I didn’t know what to check out and then my friend Flor told me to read it and told me I would love it. After I was done it the book I called her and told her how I just fell in love with it and to here up reading the 2nd book ( because she was reading it) and she just started laughig! =] I can’t wait to read the second book! =]

  84. In the middle of reading this book. As soon as I started it, I could barely put it down. Judging from where I’m up to right now, the book is well written and forceful. I’ve actually found myself scares and emotional. But a really good read, I recommend it to a young reader, of about 14, who likes murder, mysteries and a bit of horror

  87. I must admit that though I am “a little too old for Haddix”, I have a soft spot for her and her books. I have been reading her books for years now and they have enthralled me ever since I picked up one of her books. I finished the four books quickly in a thrilling, captivating trance. I am now yearning for the fifth book in the series and I hope that it is out soon. Another mesmerizing tale by Margaret Peterson Haddix.

  88. Hi, my name is Noah I am 12 years old and in the 6th grade I am reading Found (The Missing Book 1). I love the series so much I’m asking for the whole thing for my birthday. Thank you Margret Peterson Haddix for writing this book (series)
