Staying Positive

For those of you who don’t know, I teach in NJ.  The state budget is in dire straits and education is taking the hardest hit under our new governor.  As a result of the awful budget situation, I received my RIF letter on Friday.  I’m staying positive and hoping that I am brought back after this all shakes out, but I am also drafting various contingency plans.  I can’t imagine not teaching, so I am crossing my fingers that there is a spot for me come September.

However, today was an amazing day, spent with my best friends from college, their husbands, dogs, and kids.  We went to Ag Field Day at our alma mater and it was amazing.  Thank goodness for good friends!  And cute babies.  :)

  1. I am sorry to hear your stressful news. It is sad to think about an educator who works so hard for instilling a love of literacy in her students to have her job in jeopardy because of budgets. I hope that everything works out for you to secure a position at your current school or that just the right job will open up for you based on your dedication to the field.

I am proud of you for your positive attitude and glad that you were able to spend some time with college friends. It looks like Dublin was enjoying it too!

  2. I, too, am sorry to hear of your teaching situation. I recently found your blog through a friend and find your blogs to be insightful and good-natured. Your district will lose a valuable part of it, if they do let you go.

Also, congrats on your positive attitude. Not many, myself included, may handle this situation like you are. It is another credit to the dedicated teacher that you are. I hope everything works out for you.

  3. Honey, that sucks.

The county where I work is closing four elementary schools next year. Thankfully this is saving them from having to lay off any teachers… for now. I know the economy is affecting everything, but it’s terrible that we have to feel its effects in our education system. That should be the *last* place cut!

I will be thinking good thoughts about you and my fingers will be crossed for a job for you. You are an awesome, passionate teacher, and it will be to the detriment of the state of New Jersey if you are not rehired!

  4. Hard to imagine… I can see from your webpage that you are dedicated, creative and would be an asset to any classroom. Hang in there.

  5. YIKES! Sending positive thoughts your way!!

  6. I love your positive attitude. That surely is a plus and a testament to your strength that will pull you through. As many have already stated, you ARE a passionate and dedicated teacher. Any school would be blessed to have you. Surely it will all work out for the best for you.

  7. Having been there – actually, still there come to think of it – I appreciate what you’re going through and know how much it sucks. I’ve been able to call my time off my own little sabbatical – I always wanted one. ;^)

Keep your spirits up and best of luck too.

  8. I just found your blog a few weeks ago; it’s been a big inspiration to this 6th grade LA teacher… I just found out several weeks ago that I am being RIF’d; I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, so here’s hoping that things work out for you!

  9. I read your blog religiously. Your book recommendations are wonderful and popular. Are you interested at all in teaching in international schools as a new experience? I’m a Middle School Librarian at an international school in Thailand and return to the US for the summer break. Let me know if you want some tips on overseas teaching.

  10. Who is that cutie in the light blue shirt!
